This Duke University School of Medicine program provides formal academic training in the quantitative and methodological principles of clinical research. Administered by the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, the Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) is a part-time program designed for health professionals and trainees who wish to advance their research skills while continuing their clinical or professional responsibilities. All courses are delivered online in a live, synchronous format. While class sessions are recorded and made available for later review, real-time attendance is required to support active engagement, discussion, and participation.

CRTP now serves two distinct learner audiences:

  • Internal Learners: Individuals affiliated with Duke University or the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These learners may pursue the Master of Health Sciences (MHSc) degree, the Academic Core in Clinical Research Certificate, or individual nondegree coursework.

  • External Learners: Beginning in Fall 2025, CRTP will offer select certificate and nondegree course options to qualified learners outside of Duke and NIH. This expansion supports professionals seeking targeted clinical research training without pursuing a formal degree.

All CRTP learners, including external students, must reside in the United States for the duration of their participation in the program. International students who are not US citizens or nationals must submit appropriate documentation to Duke Visa Services prior to enrollment. This includes Lawful Permanent Residents, Conditional Residents, and Refugees. CRTP does not sponsor student visas; therefore, applicants must already have a valid US visa or immigration status that permits study at Duke University.

All courses are delivered in a live, synchronous online format, and real-time attendance is required. While class sessions are recorded for review, synchronous participation is an academic requirement.

Non-Program Enrollment

CRTP courses are also available to students enrolled in other Duke University credit-bearing degree programs (e.g., MD, PhD, or other master’s programs) who wish to supplement their primary academic training. These students must apply and be admitted to CRTP. These students may register for individual CRTP courses with program approval and are subject to the same prerequisites and participation expectations as other learners.
